A group of London based animal rights activists are planning to stage a large scale protest on January 24, from 12:30 until 14:30, in front of the Chinese Embassy located at 51 Portland Place, W1BJL, London. Online indicators suggest that the event will draw at least 500 protestors. The event is taking place because organizers claim that China is the primary market for Ivory products, and that consequentially China is responsible for the near extinction of the African elephant. Organizers are asking that China take the lead to curtail illegal Ivory trade, thereby putting an end to the trans-national criminal networks of poachers and ivory traffickers.
The organizers of the event have emphasized on numerous occasions that they have a peaceful outlook and that any type of violence will not be tolerated.
